The spreadsheet wizard or an import failed

Troubleshooting6 minFoundation

There are two different features here, and they fail differently. The spreadsheet wizard in the Designer builds a whole application from a workbook. Import in App space adds records to one module from a file. Find yours below.

Check. The wizard takes Excel workbooks saved as .xlsx.

Fix. Open the file in your spreadsheet program and Save as an Excel Workbook (.xlsx), then upload it again. Start each sheet with a header row of column names.

Check. The message reads We couldn't analyze your spreadsheet: followed by a reason, with the button Go Back to Upload.

Fix. Act on the reason after the colon. Open the file, make row 1 of each sheet the column names, remove any password protection, save it again as .xlsx, and upload again.

Check. The wizard reads the header row of each sheet and offers every field as Text to start.

Fix. On the Fields step, set the type of each field before you click Build My Application: Integer, Decimal, Date, Lookup and others. For Multi select lookup, Link, Rich text and User, set the type on the Fields page of the module afterwards.

The modules exist but I want to check the data

Check. After Build My Application, the wizard shows You did it!!. Open each new module and count its records against your workbook.

Fix. Name your sheets with letters and spaces, keep every data row the same width as the header row, and make your edits on the wizard steps in order, without going Back. If a module is missing rows, load them with Import in App space, which shows a preview before it changes anything.

An import in App space stops at the preview

Check. Import in the module’s list accepts .csv, .xlsx and .xls. Step 1 downloads a template, step 2 uploads your file, and a preview follows. Resolve the preview errors, then click Confirm import.

Fix. Download the template and use its column headings. Read the errors the preview lists, fix the rows in your file, and upload again. Keep the headings exactly as the template has them.

Review usage before a large import. Read Review workspace usage.
