The Smart view designer

Screen guide7 minPractitioner

Before you start

The Smart view designer is where you decide what a record shows at the top, and which tabs sit under it. Take a Bids record: its title, its status, a few key facts and the buttons that move it along. Open it from Modules by choosing a module, then Smart views in the top bar. The page is titled Smart view, and everything on it is optional.

The Smart view designer for the Bids module: the record page on the left with a header card and tabs, and the outline of its areas on the right.
Edit and the three-dot button are built into every record page.
The Facts area holds the record’s key fields, label above value.
The Actions area holds your buttons. All of them stay visible.
Text and tables holds notes, tables and reports.
The tab strip holds the built-in tabs, the related tabs and your own.
The panel on the right lists the areas. Click one to open its settings.

The left side draws the record page the way App space draws it. Click any part to select it, and the right side shows that part’s settings. Press Esc to return to the outline. Dashed outlines and the + Add buttons exist only in the designer.

Changes stay on the page until you click Save, or press Ctrl + S. Beside Save you see All changes saved or Unsaved changes. A confirmation reads Smart view saved.

Show as selects the record page preview. Choose New record page to review this layout.

On the new page the header is one card with four areas. You choose what goes in. The page decides where, by kind, in your order.

An area that holds nothing is left off the record page, so add items only to the areas you want people to see.

Under the header come the tabs. See Add related tabs.

Some parts are built into every record page:

  • Edit and the three-dot menu. The menu holds Add another, Back to records, Back to parent, Delete. Back to parent shows when the record was opened from another record. Module permissions decide what each person can use.
  • The Details, Notes and Attachments tabs. Details shows the fields from the module’s form.

Two suggestions appear in an amber box.

  • More than 6 facts: “Facts are the record’s summary under the title. More than 6 push the actions down; keep the few people check first.”
  • More than 8 buttons visible in the action bar: a suggestion to gather related ones into a named menu.

Items that need setup carry a Needs setup tag, and the outline lists them. A button without a label or action type, an empty text block, a table with no records chosen and a report with no report chosen all count.

A map of the record page and where each part is set. Open a record of the module in App space after you save, to see the page as people do.
