Arrange a form with blocks and columns

How-to6 minFoundation

Before you start

Blocks give a long form a shape. Use them to group fields by topic, and use columns and field widths to make the page easy to scan. This page covers the block header, the column switch and the Display options of a field.

The Form builder with the Financial Information block and a field card selected, showing the column switch, the four block icons and the display options icon.
Add a description puts a short line under the block title.
1 col and 2 col choose how many fields share a row.
The icons move the block up or down, open Block rules, duplicate it and delete it.
On a field card, the sliders icon opens Display options.
Part of the headerWhat it does
TitleThe block’s name. Give every block a title
Add a descriptionA short line under the title. Click it to edit
1 col / 2 colOne field per row, or two fields side by side
Up and down arrowsMove the block up or down
Eye iconOpens Block rules. See Show or lock a block with rules
Copy iconDuplicates the block with its layout, rules and components
Bin iconDeletes the block after you confirm. Its fields go back to the field list
  1. Click Add block in the toolbar, or the Add block link under the last block.
  2. Click the title “New block” and type a name.
  3. Optional: click Add a description and type a sentence. Click Save in the small dialog.
  4. Use the arrows to place the block.

Drag fields between blocks with the grip on the left of each card. An empty block shows “Drop fields here”.

A new block has 2 columns. Switch it with 1 col or 2 col in the block header. In a 1 col block every field takes the whole row.

In a 2 col block you can give one field the whole row, which suits a long text or a notes field.

Click the sliders icon on a field card. Display options opens with the field’s label in its title.

SettingWhat it does
Width in a two-column blockHalf (one column) or Full row
Enable field messageSwitches on a hint for this field
Message textThe hint itself. Shown only when the message is enabled
Message positionBelow the field, or Inside the field, as a placeholder
Show options as a listLookup fields only. People pick with one click instead of opening a dropdown
LayoutFor a lookup shown as a list: Dropdown, One column or Two columns
On the public formAppears after the form is published. See Publish a public form

Click Save in the dialog, then Save on the form. The card then shows chips such as Full width, Help text, Option list or 2-column options.

A field message that is long reads badly as a placeholder, because it disappears when people start typing. Use Below the field for anything longer than a few words. Show options as a list suits short lists. Beezr’s own hint says “Best for short lists”.

What happens to the fields in a block I delete?

Section titled “What happens to the fields in a block I delete?”

They go back to the Fields tab. Nothing is deleted from your data. If you want the fields gone from the module as well, delete them on the Fields page.

  • Keep at least one block on the form.
  • A Button takes one column in a 2 col block. Every other component takes the full row.
  • Width is a 2 col setting. Choose Half or Full row there.

Check yourself

A block is set to 1 col. What width does a field's "Width in a two-column block" setting have there?
Show the answer

It has no effect, every field is full width. In a 1 col block every field already takes the full row, so the width setting only matters in a 2 col block.

Omar duplicates a block that holds a Table component. What is copied?
Show the answer

The layout, the rules and the components. The duplicate icon is titled "Duplicate layout, rules and components".
